OXALIS adenophylla or Silver Shamrock
Over the years this delightful little plant has attained many common names, Silver Shamrock, Chilean Oxalis and Pink Carpet Oxalis are perhaps the best known.
A fantastic low growing non-invasive perennial.
The greyish green (some say silver) heart shaped leaves are densely arranged and give the impression of being folded or pleated.
When viewed from a distance the fresh foliage of Oxalis adenophylla has a distinct clover or shamrock like appearance, hence the common name Silver Shamrock.
Blooming in late spring the leaves prove the perfect foil or backdrop for the large, showy open-faced flowers.
From upright violet buds the solitary flowers open a gorgeous shade of lilac pink fading slighting towards the centre and beautifully marked with purple veins and throat.
Very floriferous, when in full bloom flowers are produced in such numbers that they all but hide the foliage.
They also have the uncanny knack of opening in daylight and closing in the evening.
Originally found in the higher mountain regions of Chile and Argentina Oxalis adenophylla is not fussy about soil type but it must be moist and well drained.
In or out of bloom it is excellent as ground-cover, makes an outstanding rockery plant and can also be used in pots, tubs and containers.
Best planted from late autumn to early spring
To help revive the bulbs it is advisable to lift and split clumps of Oxalis adenophylla every three or four years.
A hard to find and much sought-after variety that offers the most stunningly attractive foliage, outrageously beautiful flowers and an exceptionally pretty shape.
