Potatoes are a staple in British gardens and one of the most rewarding crops to grow. Easy to cultivate and adaptable to most soils, they can be planted from late February to July, depending on your location. Our seed potatoes are available from December to April and are carefully sourced from registered growers, inspected, and approved by Ministry of Agriculture officials.
Seed Potatoes are generally divided into three main types: first earlies, second earlies, and maincrop, with some growers further splitting maincrop into early and late varieties. The classification is based on how long it takes tubers to mature: first earlies (10–12 weeks), second earlies (12–16 weeks), and maincrop (16–22 weeks).
For faster establishment and earlier harvests, many gardeners “chit” first and second early varieties by allowing shoots to develop on seed tubers before planting. With proper care, potatoes provide a bountiful and versatile harvest suitable for any kitchen.
