Gooseberry Hinnonmaki Yellow
A vigorous, extremely hardy gooseberry bred in Finland.
Hinnonmaki Yellow plants are short, spreading and very, very tough.
They also show great disease resistance, their resistance to powdery mildew is so strong it is almost consigned to history.
The greenish-yellow fruit is ready to pick from June to mid-July and crops are so heavy it is sometimes necessary to support the branches because of the enormous weight of gooseberries.
Described as unique, the flavour of the juicy berries is sweet with an undertone of apricot.
Hinnonmaki Yellow gooseberries can be eaten fresh, straight from the bush or are equally as good when used to make jams, pies, puddings, crumbles or the famous gooseberry fool.
Yields of over 3kgs per plant are regularly recorded from these self-fertile bushes.
Gooseberries will tolerate a wide range of conditions but prefer a moist, well-drained soil.
Crops best in full sun but Hinnonmaki Yellow will tolerate a little light shade and can also be grown and cropped successfully in large containers.
The plant will eventually reach a height of 1.2m with a similar spread.
