Ensete Maurelii
Commonly called Ethiopian Black Banana or sometimes Red Abyssinian Banana.
Despite its tender nature this is one of the most spectacular plants that can be grown outdoors in UK.
Very fast growing Ensete quickly develops into a fountain of paddle shaped leaves deeply veined with burgundy.
A jungle type plant that fast becomes the focal point of the garden.
Ensete Maurelii is well suited for growing in a tropical garden and has become increasingly popular for summer bedding displays in recent years.
Can also be grown successfully in a large container or pot for use on the patio and is adaptable enough to make a superb house or conservatory plant.
Black Banana prefers a warm, sunny, sheltered site with moist well-drained soil.
Plant well away from strong winds, these have a tendency to damage the leaves and make them look unsightly.
Ensure Ensete has a regular supply of water and feed every two weeks with a high nitrogen fertilizer.
Although Black Banana will tolerate low temperatures it will not withstand being frozen.
Plants grown in pots or containers should be moved to a frost-free place for the winter months and those that are growing in the ground need to be cut back and dug up and kept frost free until late spring.
In southern regions of the U.K it may be possible to overwinter Ensete plants outside by cutting them back, wrapping them in horticultural fleece and mulching the roots with a deep layer of compost.
All pictures used are of mature plants in full bloom and are for illustration purposes only, they may not reflect plants at all times of the year.
Our Ensete plants are supplied ex. 9cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions.

Please remember plant maintenance within our nursery is absolutely essential and means we need to prune back some items at certain times of the year to help maintain shape and encourage new growth.
We ask all our buyers to remember Ensete is a living item and its appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.
We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our plants are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us at sales@seedsplantsbulbs.com within 48hrs of delivery. You can also notify us by telephone at 02879111497 or 02879417038. Due to the nature of the item we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Ensete Maurelii will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission. Refunds will be issued after the plants are received back in a saleable condition within 14 days from original dispatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been shipped in error.
