CANNA Tropicanna
Often called Canna Lily although they are not true lilies and are in fact related to the Ginger Plant.
A tender perennial plant with luscious tropical-like foliage and large very colourful iris-like flowers.
Despite its exotic appearance this is an easy to grow, low maintenance plant that offers long lasting flower and foliage colour in the garden.
Canna Tropicanna is well known for its dramatic, multi-coloured foliage, with tall leaf spikes unfolding to reveal leaves sensationally covered in stripes of burgundy, red, green, gold, yellow and pink.
Each leaf is different and when backlit by the sun the effect can be breath-taking, perhaps spectacular would be a better description.
From June to October the wonderful foliage is topped by the most magnificent and vivid tangerine-orange flowers.
The only word to describe a Canna Tropicanna in full bloom is astonishing.
A warm sheltered spot in full sun with moist, well fertilized, neutral or slightly acidic soil is the ideal site but they are adaptable enough to (and very many of them do) grow in containers.
When grown in containers the compost should be rich in organic matter and should be kept well-watered.
Plant outdoors in early summer after all danger of frost has passed, place the rhizomes horizontally in the hole with the eyes facing upwards, cover with 3-4 inches of soil and water well.
Plants should be spaced 2-3 ft. apart.
You can also start your Canna Tropicanna plants indoors in small pots and transplanted outside.
In mild areas of the country Canna plants can be left in the ground all year round but it is advisable to cover them with a 6 inch layer of mulch in late autumn and even then if the winter is extremely wet or cold you may lose some.
If you live in a colder area it is probably best to grow them in pots or containers and these can be moved to a frost free place for the winter months otherwise the bulbs or rhizomes need to be lifted in autumn once the top growth has begun to wither and die.
The withered foliage and stems should be cut back to around 6 inches, excess soil removed and then after drying the rhizomes can be stored in slightly damp compost in a frost-free place for the winter months.

Our plants of Canna Tropicanna are supplied ex. 9cm pots and can be planted out immediately but may benefit from growing on for a short time in a slightly lager container before planting in their final growing positions.

We ask all our buyers to remember Canna Tropicanna plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.
We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Canna Tropicanna will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return. Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original despatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been dispatched in error.
