BLUEBELLS
Hyacinthoides non-scripta
The original and much loved English Bluebell that naturalises so prolifically especially in the partial or dappled shade under trees where other plants struggle.
A swathe of bluebells in full bloom brings memories of woodland walks as the weather warms up and the days begin to lengthen, their rich blue heads nodding in the gentle spring breeze as if awaiting the arrival of summer.
The delicately scented flowers are great for attracting insects to the garden.
Bluebells thrive in a moisture-retentive, humus-rich, woodland type soil.
The site should be well-drained, cool and shady but it shouldn’t dry out in summer.
Most soils benefit from the addition of well decomposed leaf mould or leaf-litter before planting.
Very vigorous, bluebells multiply every year and will eventually form a carpet of spring colour.
All pictures used are of mature plants in bloom and are for illustration purposes only.
Bulbs should be unpacked and/or planted immediately they arrive.
