Maincrop Potatoes
Maincrop potatoes are the largest and highest-yielding potato group, offering larger tubers, diverse textures, and rich flavors. Plant from mid-March to late May, depending on local conditions, with harvest 16–20 weeks later, from late August onwards. For optimal growth, plant seed tubers 12–14cm deep, 60cm apart, with 75cm between rows. Chitting is optional but may improve early development. Not suited for containers, these potatoes thrive in open fields and can be stored for long-term use, often into the following spring. Versatile in the kitchen, they are perfect for boiling, mashing, roasting, baking, chips, or wedges. Take care against pests and diseases, particularly blight, though some modern varieties are resistant.
