About Wilja Seed Potatoes
Wilja Seed Potatoes are a highly regarded second early potato variety, valued for their versatility, flavour and reliability. Classified as a general-purpose potato, Wilja performs exceptionally well across boiling, roasting and baking, making it a firm favourite with gardeners, growers and home cooks alike.
The tubers are long to oval in shape, medium to large in size, with a rough yellow skin, shallow eyes and attractive light-yellow flesh. Their even shape and moderate firmness ensure consistent cooking results and excellent presentation straight from the ground.
Texture, Taste & Kitchen Performance
Wilja potatoes offer a waxy to slightly dry texture with a robust, earthy flavour that holds well during cooking. They are especially popular for boiling and salads, yet versatile enough for mashing and roasting when harvested at the right time.
Growing Characteristics
Wilja is a high-yielding variety, with hundreds of acres grown annually on the fertile Romney Marsh. Plants are medium height, domed, and produce a large number of stems. The foliage is blue-green, lightly glossy, with closed leaves, while plants display white flowers on medium stalks and occasional berries.
This variety shows good resistance to common scab, potato leaf roll virus and drought, making it a dependable choice in a wide range of growing conditions. From planting to lifting, Wilja typically matures within 13–14 weeks.
Storage & Certification
Wilja tubers store particularly well for an early cropper when kept in a cool, dry, frost-free and well-ventilated place. All seed potatoes supplied are Scottish Certified, carefully hand-picked, packed and labelled to ensure quality and traceability.
