SWEET POTATO ORLEANS
Sweet potatoes are the tubers of the attractive climbing or spreading plant Ipomaea batatas with ornamental heart-shaped leaves and trumpet shaped flowers similar to those of Morning Glory to which it is related.
Native to Central and South America the sweet potato was introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus after his first voyage to the America’s in 1492.
One of the world’s oldest known vegetables it has been consumed since prehistoric times and relics dating back around 10,000 years have been discovered in caves in Peru.
Sweet Potato Orleans has smooth light rose or pink skin and deep orange flesh very similar to Sweet Potato Beauregard but what makes Orleans so different and outstanding for the grower is the regular and uniform shape of the tubers.
Although grown principally for the large starchy tubers the young leaves and shoots of the Sweet Potato plant can also be eaten as greens.
Roasted, mashed, baked or fried sweet potatoes make a delicious alternative to the humble spud and what was once considered exotic is now more readily available and in recent years popularity has soared.
For maximum sweetness grow in full sun on a fertile, well drained site and while not particularly fussy they do prefer an acid to neutral soil and thrive best in high humidity.
Plant in rows with 12 inches between the plants and 30 inches between the rows.
Where space is limited, Sweet Potatoes can be successfully grown in containers or patio bags.
Please remember Sweet Potatoes are half-hardy and should only be planted outside when all danger of frost has passed.

We ask all our buyers to remember Sweet Potatoes are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.
We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our items are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the product we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Sweet Potatoes will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission for their return. Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original dispatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been dispatched in error.
