PHORMIUM Black Adder
Also known as New Zealand Flax
An evergreen perennial forming a clump of long, slightly arching, strap-shaped, dark purple almost black leaves.
Black Adder leaves have a lustrous sheen and sometimes appear to have a reddish tint.
Impressive when used as a patio plant or as a center-piece in a mixed border.
Growing just 1m tall and 1m wide Phormium Black Adder is ideal in gravel or Mediterranean gardens and can also be grown in pots, tubs and containers.
Although it will tolerate a little partial shade a site in full sun with moist, well drained, fertile soil is preferred.
Mature specimens of Black Adder may occasionally produce spikes of red flowers in late summer.
Fully hardy but a little protection from cold drying winds is always a good idea.
Some protection from snails and slugs may be needed when the plants are young.
Phormium Black Adder is an easy plant to grow and very suitable for the smaller gardens of today.
All pictures used are of mature plants in full bloom, they are for illustration purposes only and may not necessarily reflect plants at all times of the year.
Our Phormium plants are supplied ex. 9cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions.

Please remember, plant maintenance within our nursery is absolutely essential and means we need to prune back some items at certain times of the year to help maintain shape and encourage new growth.
We ask all our buyers to remember Phormium Black Adder is a living item and its appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.
We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our New Zealand Flax are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48 hours of delivery. Due to the nature of the product we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Phormium Black Adder will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission. Refunds will be issued after items are received back in a saleable condition within 14 days from original dispatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been shipped in error.
