OPHIOPOGON nigrescens
Also known as Black Dragon, Ebony Knight and Arabicus.
A cultivar of mondo grass that forms dense tufts of arching strap-like leaves.
The grass-like leaves of Ophiopogon nigrescens are very dark almost jet black and are approx. 20-30 cm long.
In summer (June –August) racemes of small bell-shaped pale pinkish mauve flowers are carried on dark stems and are occasionally followed by shiny dark blue/purple berries in autumn.
Ophiopogon Nigrescens is great for edging beds and borders or for under-planting shrubs.
Can also be used in gravel gardens, Mediterranean gardens or raised beds and is stunning when planted in containers and tubs.
Being salt and drought tolerant make Ophiopogon nigrescens suitable for coastal locations.
Provides brilliant contract when inter-planted with silver, gold or other light coloured foliage plants.
Black Dragon prefers a site with moist but well drained, slightly acidic, humus rich soil and is not fussy about full sun or partial/dappled shade although the darkest/blackest colour is achieved when grown in full sun.
Slow growing but long lived and very durable, this evergreen is virtually disease free and is easy to care for.
Growing just 15-25 cm tall Ophiopogon nigrescens is perfect for adding contrast and drama to the garden.
Very eye-catching and dramatic.
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
