KNIPHOFIA citrina
Over the years Kniphofia has gathered a number of common names, tritoma, torch lily, poker plant but is perhaps best known as Red Hot Poker.
Kniphofia is a clump forming evergreen perennial native to the coastal marshes of South Africa.
Broad, sword-shaped, arching, green foliage, arranged in arching rosettes and topped by dense spikes of elongated or egg-shaped lime yellow blooms that fade to yellow and then to back to green as they mature.
Red Hot Poker blooms are carried on strong, stout stems, they are long lasting, colour usually begin in June yet is often still showing well into October.
Growing around 2ft. tall this impressive landscape plant provides a brilliant patch of colour in autumn when many other flowering shrubs and plants are past their peak and beginning to fade.
Bees find Kniphofia citrina particularly attractive as do many other beneficial insects.
Although at its best in a rich, fertile, moist but well drained soil it is still adaptable enough to grow in a large container.
Fully hardy, but citrina resents a cold wet site in winter but will thrive in full sun or partial shade.
When flowering has finished in autumn a heavy mulch is highly recommended if you live in a cold or particularly damp area.
Large or overcrowded plants can be lifted and divided in spring but Kniphofia citrina dislikes disturbance so this should only be done when absolutely necessary.
We supply Kniphofia citrina ex. 10cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions.
Expert Village Leaf Group have a very informative video on this colourful cultivar.

Please remember, plant maintenance within our nursery is absolutely essential and means we need to prune back some items at certain times of the year to help maintain shape and encourage new growth.
We ask all our buyers to remember Red Hot Poker are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.
