CROCUS sativus
The Saffron Crocus
This autumn flowering beauty is useful as well as beautiful.
The flowers which are a rich lilac colour with distinctive purple veins are quite simply magnificent yet this beauty also manages to produce Saffron, the world’s most expensive spice.
Saffron, the only spice to come from a flower is harvested by gathering the three long, deep-red stigmas from the female plant and drying them.
Easy to grow crocus sativus should be planted approx. 4inches deep in drifts.
They thrive in gritty well drained soil in full sun.
When planted in grass this should not be mowed until after the crocus leaves have died back.
Plant crocus sativus in late summer/early autumn and enjoy a dazzling display of colour in October/November.
They can also be grown in a pot for use on the balcony or patio and when grown like this care should be taken to avoid over-watering.
It is important to note that Crocus Sativus bulbs may have shoots on them when they are delivered in autumn. These shoots do not harm the bulb, they die off and the bulb throws new shoots in spring.
You are also advised that Crocus Sativus sometimes sulk and do flower in the first year but are fine in later years.
