Dahlia Unwin Seeds – Compact Dwarf Dahlias for Pots, Borders & Cut Flowers (Free UK Delivery)
Add a burst of colour to your garden this summer with Dahlia Unwin — a beautiful, compact dwarf dahlia that’s ideal for borders, containers, patio pots, and cut flower displays. These easy-to-grow hybrids produce abundant semi-double blooms in dazzling shades of red, pink, orange, yellow, and white. Their long flowering season lasts from midsummer right through to the first autumn frost, ensuring months of vibrant garden colour.
Reaching a tidy height of 12–18 inches, Dahlia Unwin is perfect for smaller gardens or spaces where full-sized dahlias might overwhelm. The sturdy, bushy growth means these plants rarely need staking, and their compact habit makes them a great choice for balconies or patio containers.
Planting & Growing Instructions
-
When to sow: Wait until spring when the soil temperature reaches at least 15°C (60°F).
-
Where to plant: Choose a sunny, well-drained position or use containers filled with a quality potting mix.
-
Spacing: Plant about 12 inches apart for best results.
-
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged once growth begins.
-
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks throughout the growing season.
Care & Maintenance
-
Pinching: Pinch out the growing tips when plants reach around 8 inches to encourage bushier growth and more blooms.
-
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to promote continuous flowering.
-
Pest control: Watch for slugs, aphids, and earwigs.
-
Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Overwintering
In frost-prone areas, lift and store the tubers once frost blackens the foliage. Clean and dry them thoroughly, then store in a cool, frost-free place in slightly damp peat or sand until spring replanting.
