BERBERIS atropurpurea Nana
Commonly called Japanese Barbery
A compact, dwarf shrub with colourful purplish-red leaves on thorny branches.
Deciduous, the foliage appears to become brighter before falling in autumn.
In mid-spring Berberis atropurpurea Nana carries small yellow (almost hidden by the foliage) flowers and these are followed by small glossy red berries in late autumn.
Excellent at the front of the shrub border but also makes a great low hedge and growing just 60cm tall is excellent in a pot or container.
Berberis atropurpurea Nana is a good plant for attracting wildlife to the garden, birds feast on the berries throughout the winter months.
Tough, easy to grow and one of the most popular shrubs in the Barbery family.
Prefers a site with moist, well-drained soil in full sun and can be planted in coastal locations.
Japanese Barbery will tolerate partial shade but best colour is achieved in full sun.
A low maintenance shrub, simply prune out any broken or straggly branches in autumn.
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Please remember plant maintenance within our nursery is absolutely essential and means we need to prune back some items at certain times of the year to help maintain shape and encourage new growth.
We ask all our buyers to remember Berberis plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.
We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our Barbery are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Berberis atropurpurea Nana will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission. Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original dispatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been dispatched in error.
