Beetroot Boltardy – Classic Red, Juicy and Award-Winning
Beetroot Boltardy is a classic round beetroot with vibrant red, juicy flesh, perfect for immediate use or long-term winter storage. Known for its rich earthy flavor and tender texture, this variety is a gardener’s favorite, carrying the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Growing Requirements
Boltardy thrives in a sunny spot with moist, fertile soil, but it’s equally happy in raised beds, pots, or containers, making it ideal for small gardens or urban growing spaces. Early sowings can be started from late winter, though raising seedlings is tricky. For best results, sow seeds directly into the soil from April to July.
-
Soil Preparation: Spread a general fertilizer a couple of weeks before sowing and rake it into the soil.
-
Sowing: Create a 2cm deep trench, drop two seeds every 10cm, cover, and water well.
-
Thinning: When seedlings reach 2cm, remove the weakest of each pair.
For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every month with rows 20cm apart. Beetroot Boltardy is ready to harvest when roots are golf ball to tennis ball size, usually 50–70 days after sowing.
