ASPARAGUS Connover’s Colossal

Now regarded as a heritage variety this much sought-after plant was first introduced way back in the 1800’s and has been acclaimed ever since.

Connover’s Colossal produces exceptionally high yields of well flavoured bright green spears with deep purple tips.

Forever in demand this old Victorian favourite has proven to be particularly reliable in the UK climate.

Easy to grow Asparagus prefers a slightly sheltered, sunny site but needs well drained soil.

Plant 12-18ins apart with 18ins between rows and stagger the plants.

Keep well-watered until established and a plentiful supply of water should also be available in very dry weather.

A top dressing of fertilizer is strongly advised.

For the best results it is essential that Asparagus beds are kept weed free.

The spears should be harvested in spring although it is best if you don’t pick any the first spring after planting, they are best left until the second year before enjoying the fruits of your labour.

Delicious when lightly cooked in butter.

Although usually grown as a vegetable Asparagus Connover’s Colossal also finds use in the ornamental garden.

The tall wiry stems often reach 140-150cm and the soft feathery foliage blends well with other larger leafed plants and in late summer bright red berries are produced which complement the fine foliage.

Tolerance of winds and salt laden air makes Asparagus Connover’s Colossal ideal for coastal planting.

Our Asparagus plants are supplied ex. 9cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions.

We ask all our buyers to remember Asparagus plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons.  Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year and just enjoying a well-earned rest before bursting into action for the new season. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.

We want you to be happy with your purchase and all our Asparagus plants are checked and inspected visually before packing. In the unlikely event of a problem please advise us within 48hrs of delivery. Due to the nature of the goods we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll. Asparagus will only be accepted for return after seller has been informed and given permission.  Refunds will be issued when items are received back in saleable condition within 14 days from original dispatch date. Buyer must pay all return charges except where an item has been dispatched in error.
