ALLIUM Purple Sensation. Ornamental Onion.

ALLIUM Purple Sensation

Commonly referred to as Ornamental Onion.

A bulbous perennial with glossy, strap-shaped basal leaves that die before the flowers begin to fade.

Masses of deep violet-purple florets packed together to form impressive rounded flower heads which can be up to 10cm across and are often said to resemble giant lollipops.

Flowering in May the tall spikes of Allium Purple Sensation regularly reach 100cm and are extremely attractive to all kinds of beneficial insects.

These stylish and flamboyant bulbs will certainly add drama and pizzazz to your beds and borders.

The flower stalks dry well and can also be used in dry arrangements or they can be left on the plant to provide interest in the autumn and winter when they look stunning covered with frost.

All seed-heads should be removed as self-sown seedlings tend to have much paler flowers.

Contact with bulbs of Allium Purple Sensation may occasionally irritate the skin.

Alliums are hardy and for best effect plant in groups of three or five in autumn around 3 inches deep.
